Most users don't see a difference between websites and web applications and call all content a "website". But the difference is great, and every advanced user should understand and distinguish between these basic concepts.

Application Development

A website is one page or several linked web pages on a common topic and style, with content in various formats. Content can be text, media (images, video, audio, maps, etc.).

Main types of websites:

Websites are created for quick and convenient presentation of products, brand promotion, business development and maximum accessibility to customers.

A web application is a complete software that is available through the browser. In other words, it's a website with extensive functionality and many interactive components.

Web applications can solve many tasks, so development and implementation are more expensive and complex than creating websites.

Their main goal is access to data from different devices through all browsers, i.e., they are cross‑platform and cross‑browser.

A few more differences:

  • Interaction with customers – Content on a website is available for viewing and listening, and this doesn't affect resource operation. Web application users work with data, fill forms and send requests.
  • Authentication – On websites, registration is not mandatory, but to use a web application fully, you need to log into a personal account.
  • Changes – To edit HTML pages, you don't need much time and full compilation. To change web applications, you need to compile new code, assemble into a separate executable file and publish the software for user access.
